Emollients treat dry, scaling, or fissured skin regardless of the specific underlying dermatosis and are first-line, safe symptomatic care.
- Widespread scaling or fissuring with systemic illness could indicate erythroderma or a severe eczema/psoriasis flare needing urgent care.
- Regular, liberal emollient use is the mainstay for peeling, scaling, or fissured skin from most causes.
- If scaling is widespread and associated with systemic illness or redness, consider erythroderma or a severe eczema/psoriasis flare and seek urgent review rather than emollient alone.
- Warn about fire hazard when fabric contacts paraffin-based products.
